About this calculator

This tool builds a complete household electricity picture, one appliance at a time. Each row converts an appliance's power rating, quantity, and actual usage pattern into daily, monthly, and yearly kilowatt-hours, then multiplies by your electricity price to estimate its share of your bill. Adding several appliances — a refrigerator that runs continuously, a television used a few hours a night, a washing machine run twice a week — quickly builds up a realistic total that a single “average daily usage” number could never capture.

Home electricity bills are the sum of dozens of individual appliances, each with wildly different power draws and usage patterns. A refrigerator draws relatively little power but runs around the clock; an electric water heater or clothes dryer draws far more power but only for short bursts; LED lighting draws almost nothing per bulb but multiplies across a house full of fixtures. Breaking usage down appliance-by-appliance, rather than guessing at a single daily total, is the only reliable way to see where electricity spending is actually going.

The preset wattages built into this calculator are reasonable typical values for common household appliances, based on commonly published averages — but actual power draw varies a lot by brand, size, age, and efficiency rating. An old refrigerator can draw noticeably more than a new energy-efficient model of the same size, and a window air conditioner draws far less than a central system. Whenever precision matters, check the wattage printed on the appliance's own rating label or in its manual and enter that instead of the preset.

This calculator deliberately avoids assuming appliances run at a perfectly constant load the whole time they're “on” — for instance, a refrigerator's compressor cycles on and off rather than running continuously, which is why it has its own dedicated calculator with a duty-cycle option. For most other appliances, entering realistic actual-use hours (not the hours they're merely plugged in) gives the most accurate estimate.

How accurate are the preset wattage values?

They're reasonable typical averages for each appliance type, useful for a quick estimate. For a precise figure, check the wattage printed on your specific appliance's rating label or user manual and type that number in instead.

Why does the calculator ask for both quantity and hours per day?

Many homes have more than one of the same appliance — several televisions, multiple lamps, more than one fan — so quantity lets you total them in a single row instead of adding a separate row for each identical device.

Can I remove an appliance I added by mistake?

Yes — press the Remove button on that row to clear it and hide it again; it won't be included in the total the next time you calculate.
