It supports four common surface types — a single wall, a ceiling or floor, a pitched roof (where the pitch angle increases the actual surface area beyond the flat footprint), and a whole room combining its wall and ceiling area — and three material formats, since rolls and boards are sold by area while loose-fill and spray products are sold by volume.
A pitched roof has more actual surface area than its flat horizontal footprint suggests, because the roof surface is tilted rather than flat — the steeper the pitch, the larger the real area that needs covering for the same footprint. This calculator accounts for that by dividing the flat length × width area by the cosine of the pitch angle, a standard geometric adjustment used throughout roofing and insulation estimating.
A waste allowance exists because insulation material is rarely used with zero offcuts — rolls need to be cut to fit around corners, pipes, and electrical boxes, and boards rarely divide evenly into a room's exact dimensions. 10% is a commonly used default for straightforward rectangular spaces; more complex layouts with many obstructions or irregular shapes may reasonably need a higher allowance.
Coverage per roll, board, or bag varies significantly between brands and products — a compressed mineral wool roll and a lightweight fiberglass batt of the same physical size can cover very different areas once accounted for thickness and density. Always check the actual coverage figure printed on the specific product's packaging rather than relying on this calculator's placeholder examples, since using the wrong coverage number is the single most common source of error in a materials estimate like this.
A pitched (sloped) roof's actual surface area is larger than its flat horizontal footprint — the steeper the slope, the bigger the real area you need to cover. Entering the pitch angle corrects for this automatically.
