This tool measures the true span between any two calendar dates, whichever calendar each one happens to be recorded in. Every date you enter — Gregorian or Hijri — is first converted to a Julian Day Number, a single continuous day count used in astronomy and calendar science, using the tabular Kuwaiti algorithm that this website uses consistently for every Hijri conversion. Subtracting the two Julian Day Numbers gives an exact total-day count that needs no further interpretation. From there, the calculator works out the difference a second time in each calendar's own units — Hijri years, months, and days using real 29- or 30-day Hijri month lengths, and Gregorian years, months, and days using real 28-to-31-day Gregorian month lengths — rather than dividing by an average year length, which would drift out of precision over long spans. This makes the tool equally useful for a short practical question, like whether a Hawl has completed for Zakat purposes, and a long historical one, like the exact Hijri span between two dates centuries apart.
Plenty of calculators can tell you how many days sit between two Gregorian dates. Far fewer can do the same when one or both of those dates belong to the Hijri calendar, or tell you the answer in Hijri years, months, and days rather than only Gregorian ones. The clearest everyday use is tracking a Hawl — the single lunar year of continuous ownership above the Nisab threshold that most schools of Islamic jurisprudence require before Zakat becomes due on cash, gold, silver, or trade goods. A Hawl is measured in Hijri time, 354 or 355 days depending on the specific year, not a flat 365-day Gregorian year. The same underlying calculation is useful well beyond Zakat. Some countries record rental agreements, loan terms, or waqf (endowment) conditions with Hijri dates, and working out a remaining term or an elapsed period means comparing Hijri dates directly rather than roughly converting each one to Gregorian by hand and hoping the rounding doesn't matter.
