The total area is divided by the area of one sheet to get a base sheet count, with a wastage allowance, 10% by default, added on top to cover cuts around door and window openings, electrical outlets, and irregular corners where a full sheet won't fit cleanly. The tool also shows an estimated number of screws needed at a common approximate installation rate, about 12 screws per square meter, a general guideline that helps estimate fastener purchases alongside the sheets themselves, though the actual number may vary slightly depending on the spacing of the supporting metal or wood framing behind the drywall, since tighter framing spacing requires proportionally more fastening points.
The basic math behind drywall estimation looks simple — total wall or ceiling area divided by one sheet's area gives the sheet count — but a purely mathematical division without any adjustment consistently undershoots what a real installation actually requires, for reasons that become obvious once you've done the job yourself but aren't always intuitive beforehand.
Real walls and ceilings are rarely perfectly rectangular multiples of the standard sheet size. Door and window openings interrupt otherwise continuous wall sections, corners require careful cutting to maintain proper joint alignment, and electrical outlet and switch cutouts consume material without contributing usable coverage elsewhere. Every cut piece that doesn't get used elsewhere on the job represents wasted material that a pure area calculation doesn't account for.
This is exactly why a wastage allowance — commonly set around 10% for typical residential rooms — is standard practice among drywall installers rather than an optional safety margin. Rooms with more openings, more complex layouts, or more corners generally warrant a higher allowance than a large, simple, uninterrupted wall or ceiling section would need.
Beyond the sheets themselves, fasteners represent a real, easily overlooked cost and planning item. The commonly cited rate of roughly 12 screws per square meter reflects standard installation practice for typical wall framing spacing, but this can shift meaningfully with tighter or wider framing — closer stud or joist spacing means more attachment points are available and typically used, which slightly increases actual screw consumption per unit area.
For multi-room projects, calculating each room's area separately and summing them, rather than trying to estimate total square footage from memory or a rough floor plan glance, meaningfully improves accuracy — irregular room shapes, varying ceiling heights, and different wall configurations between rooms all make a room-by-room calculation considerably more reliable than a single whole-house estimate attempted in one step.
Measure each wall's height × length, add them together for all walls and ceilings you're covering, then subtract the area of any large door or window openings.
