This tool calculates the amount of general flooring material needed for a room, and supports two common types: planks, such as laminate or vinyl, which are calculated by count, and carpet, which is sold as a roll of fixed width and calculated by the length required from that roll. For planks, the room area is divided by the area of one plank to get a base count, with a wastage allowance added, 10% by default, to cover cuts at walls, around door thresholds, and the staggered installation pattern most plank flooring requires for a stable, visually pleasing result, since staggering deliberately creates offcuts that can't always be reused elsewhere in the room. For carpet, the room area is divided by the standard roll width to get the required length, with an extra margin added to cover cutting differences and seams that occur when joining multiple roll lengths together in large or irregularly shaped rooms, since carpet seams need careful pattern and pile-direction alignment that consumes some material beyond the theoretical minimum.

Carpet works on entirely different logic, since it's sold as a continuous roll of fixed width — commonly around 3.66 meters (12 feet) in many markets, though this varies. For a room narrower than the roll width, calculating required length is straightforward: room length plus a small trim margin. But for rooms wider than the standard roll width, multiple roll lengths need to be seamed together, and matching pile direction and any pattern across a seam consumes extra material beyond the room's raw area.
Room shape matters more for carpet than for planks specifically because of this seaming requirement — a perfectly rectangular room aligned with the roll's natural orientation wastes very little material, while an irregularly shaped room, or one that requires the roll to run in a less efficient direction to match adjoining rooms' carpet direction, can waste considerably more than the standard estimate accounts for.
For either material, buying slightly more than the bare calculated minimum is standard practice specifically because flooring materials are frequently sold in fixed package sizes (boxes of planks, or carpet sold by the linear meter with minimum order lengths), and running short mid-installation — especially with dye-lot or batch variations between separately purchased material — can create a visible mismatch that's more costly to fix than simply ordering a reasonable buffer from the start.
