🔒 Privacy note: Everything on this page runs entirely inside your browser using client-side JavaScript. Nothing you type is ever uploaded, logged, or sent to any server. Location detection only ever runs after you press the button above, and only your approximate coordinates are sent (once) to a location lookup service to determine your country — never stored, and never sent anywhere else.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose what you're pricing (Gold, Silver, or any of 165 currencies) in the first ("From") list, and what to price it in from the second ("To") list.
  2. If either side is a metal, a unit selector appears — choose gram or troy ounce.
  3. Optionally press "📍 Use my location" to fill in your local currency automatically, after your browser asks permission — this never happens automatically.
  4. Enter an amount and press Calculate. In live mode the price refreshes automatically about once a minute, or press "🔄 Refresh price now" any time; switch to "✍️ Manual entry" to type your own price instead.

Everything runs locally in your browser — no sign-up required, and no data is ever sent anywhere except the live price/rate lookups themselves.

About this calculator

This tool prices gold or silver against any of 165 world currencies — or against each other — using a live international spot price for the metal and a live exchange rate for the currency conversion, refreshed automatically about once a minute so the figure stays current while you have the page open. Choosing the unit (gram or troy ounce, the two standard weights used for precious metals worldwide) only changes which weight the price refers to, using the standard conversion of 31.1034768 grams per troy ounce; it never changes the underlying spot price itself. If the live source is temporarily unavailable, the tool automatically offers manual entry, and remembers your last known price so it never leaves you with a blank screen.

An optional, entirely opt-in location button can fill in your local currency for you — it only ever runs after you press it yourself, your browser then asks permission the normal way, and if it fails or you decline, the rest of the tool keeps working exactly as before with manual currency selection.

Understanding the Gold and Silver Spot Price

The "spot price" of gold or silver is the international reference price for immediate delivery of the raw metal, continuously set by trading activity on global commodity and precious-metals markets rather than by any single company or country. It's the number that appears in financial news, that jewelers and refiners use as their starting point, and that this calculator fetches directly from a live public price feed and converts into a per-gram or per-troy-ounce figure in whichever currency you choose.

It's worth being clear about what the spot price is not: it isn't the price a jeweler will pay you for a used piece of jewelry, nor the price they'll charge you for a new one. A jeweler's buy price for scrap gold is typically somewhat below spot, to cover refining and a margin, while their sell price for finished jewelry is typically well above spot, to cover making charges, design, wastage, and retail margin. The spot price is the common reference both of those numbers are built from — useful for understanding roughly where you stand, but not a substitute for asking a specific seller or buyer for their actual quote.

Gold and silver are conventionally weighed in troy ounces in international trading (about 31.1034768 grams — slightly heavier than the everyday "avoirdupois" ounce used for most other goods), while many retail markets, especially across the Middle East, South Asia, and much of the world's jewelry trade, quote and sell by the gram instead. This calculator lets you pick whichever unit matches how you're used to thinking about it, or compare the two directly — a troy ounce of gold priced in grams of silver is a perfectly valid comparison, and is exactly what the classical "gold/silver ratio" that market commentators sometimes discuss actually measures.

Because both metal spot prices and currency exchange rates move throughout the trading day, any figure shown here reflects the moment it was fetched rather than a fixed, permanent number — which is exactly why this tool refreshes itself automatically roughly once a minute while the page stays open, rather than requiring a manual refresh every time you want an up-to-date figure.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the price of a bar of gold, or of finished jewelry?

It's the international spot price of the raw metal itself — the same reference figure traders quote — not a local jeweler's selling price for finished jewelry, which normally adds making charges, design, and a retail margin on top.

Why does the price shown here differ from my local jeweler or exchange?

Local buy/sell prices always sit a little above or below the international spot price to cover the seller's margin, refining costs, and local supply and demand. This tool shows the underlying global reference price, which is the starting point local prices are built from, not a substitute for a specific local quote.

Does it work without an internet connection?

The live auto-updating mode needs a connection to fetch current prices. Switch to Manual entry and type in a rate you already know, and the calculator keeps working fully offline.

How is my local currency detected?

Only if you press the "Use my location" button yourself — nothing is detected automatically when the page loads. Your browser then asks your permission, and if you allow it, your approximate location is used once to guess your local currency. You can always ignore this and pick a currency manually instead.

What's the difference between the gram and troy ounce options?

They're just two common units for weighing precious metals. A troy ounce equals about 31.1034768 grams. Switching the unit changes which weight the displayed price refers to, not the underlying price itself.

How often does the live price update?

Automatically about once a minute while this page is open and visible, plus instantly whenever you press "Refresh price now" or change either currency.
