This calculator uses the classification standard published by the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology (AHA/ACC, 2017 guideline), which divides readings into five categories: Normal (below 120/80), Elevated (120–129 with the lower number below 80), Hypertension Stage 1 (130–139 or 80–89), Stage 2 (140 or higher, or 90 or higher), and Hypertensive Crisis (above 180 and/or 120), a level requiring immediate medical attention. It's important to note that a single reading is not enough for a diagnosis — blood pressure naturally fluctuates throughout the day depending on activity, stress, and even how recently you've had caffeine, so a doctor typically relies on multiple readings taken on separate occasions, often including home monitoring, before reaching any conclusion.
A blood pressure reading is really two measurements packed into one: the systolic number on top, capturing the pressure in your arteries at the exact moment your heart contracts and pushes blood out, and the diastolic number on the bottom, capturing the pressure during the brief rest between beats. Both matter, and clinicians classify a reading using whichever of the two numbers falls into the higher-risk category, not just the average of the two.
The categories used in this calculator come from the 2017 AHA/ACC guideline, which lowered the threshold for Stage 1 hypertension compared to older guidelines — a change made after large studies showed that cardiovascular risk begins rising well before the traditional 140/90 cutoff. Under this standard, a reading below 120/80 is Normal; 120–129 systolic with diastolic still under 80 is Elevated; 130–139 or 80–89 is Stage 1; 140/90 or above is Stage 2; and above 180 and/or 120 is a Hypertensive Crisis requiring urgent medical evaluation, regardless of symptoms.
What a single reading cannot tell you is whether that number represents your typical blood pressure or a temporary spike. Pressure rises with physical activity, stress, pain, caffeine, and even the anxiety some people feel specifically in a medical setting — a pattern well-documented enough to have its own name, "white coat hypertension." This is why clinical guidelines call for confirming an elevated office reading with repeated measurements, ideally including readings taken at home over several days, before diagnosing hypertension.
Accurate readings also depend on technique: using a properly sized cuff, sitting with your back supported and feet flat on the floor, resting quietly for five minutes beforehand, and keeping your arm at heart level all measurably affect the result. Skipping these steps is one of the most common reasons home readings differ from those taken in a clinic.
